Study: U.S. remains the leader in information technology

Updated: Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Business careers in information technology (IT) in the U.S. continue to grow despite an uncertain economic climate.

The U.S. was ranked first in the world in the Economist Intelligence Unit's annual IT Industry Competitiveness index, earning a score of 78.9 out of a possible 100.

The study compared 66 economies based on their ability to foster IT sector competitiveness according to six factors that compose a sound environment for the sector. These include: supply of highly skilled workers; innovative culture supportive of research and development; technology infrastructure; legal environment to protect intellectual property; open, competitive business environment; and a good balance of government leadership.

Robert Holleyman, president and CEO of the Business Software Alliance which sponsored the study, said the results provide a "telling indication of what will drive [America's] economic growth in the long term," but cited "key challenges" the country needs to address to "retain its leadership position."

Those interested in business careers in information technology may wish to enter MBA programs to increase their earning potential.

PayScale.com, a research company, says that average salaries for holders of MBA degrees ranged from $73,510 to $171,583 in 2008, depending on the field, position and years of experience.
