Updated: Wednesday, November 18th, 2009
Marketing professionals may improve their hold on domestic and international business by harnessing the opportunities offered by social networking tools, a new survey suggests.
Approximately 35 percent of adult internet users currently have profiles on social networks, which shows a 400 percent increase from last year, according to recent research from CMO Club.
However, approximately 84 percent of chief marketing officers surveyed by the organization said they devote less than 10 percent of their budgets to exploring social media and nontraditional methods of communications.
"In today's digital age, communication has evolved into a new model that requires active listening and engaging in numerous conversations," said Pete Krainik, CEO of CMO Club.
While 31 percent of respondents said they are currently developing social media policies, many marketing professionals reported they are having trouble learning and implementing social networking into their communication efforts are thus unable to reach this rapidly growing market.
Associates, bachelors or masters programs in marketing or communications may help professionals update their skill sets in order to stay abreast rising trends in the industry.
Opportunities for marketing managers, who earned average median salaries of $98,720 in May 2006, are expected to grow by 12 percent over the next seven years.
