Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute to offer entrepreneurship program

Updated: Friday, September 25th, 2009

The Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech) announced that it will offer a new entrepreneurship program for freshmen and sophomores in bachelors programs at the University of Maryland.

Qualified students who choose to participate in the program will live together and learn entrepreneurship through experiential learning, courses, seminars, workshops and volunteer opportunities. The program is slated to begin in the fall of 2010.

The curriculum will require students to work in teams to develop an idea and write a product plan to support it. They may enter their projects in the university's $75,000 Business Plan competition or use it to apply for the $250,000 Mtech Impact Seed Fund.

James V. Green, associate director of entrepreneurship education at the university, noted that this program is intended to complement the school's living-learning Hinman CEO program for juniors and seniors and aims to offer "students entering the university…similar access to the dynamic environment of living and learning with entrepreneurially minded individuals."

Students currently in bachelors programs for entrepreneurship may consider entering an accredited MBA program to increase their earning potential. PayScale.com, a research company, says that average salaries for holders of MBA degrees ranged from $73,510 to $171,583 in 2008, depending on the field, position and years of experience.
