Updated: Friday, October 16th, 2009
Northeastern University in Boston has announced that it will begin offering a masters degree program in information assurance, which may be partially or wholly completed online.
Students who attend the university's College of Computer and Information Science may enroll in the new degree program and choose to fulfill its requirements through online courses, classroom-based curriculum or a combination of the two methods.
The program will require degree candidates to take classes in technology as well as social science, law, criminology and management to satisfy interdisciplinary requirements.
The curriculum is designed to provide students and professionals with technical and non-technical backgrounds with the skills they will need to fight identity theft and prevent information security breaches in their careers.
The new program is intended to "allow more students the opportunity to pursue [an information security] degree" and address "the high demand for skilled professionals who can keep data as safe as possible," said Themis Papageorge, head of the program.
Associates, bachelors and masters programs in engineering or computer networking and programming may open doors to profitable business careers in technology. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of computer and information and systems managers will grow by 16 percent over the next seven years.
